Safe Rates:

Did you know that under Australian Legislation, all parties associated with the organizing of transport are responsible under Supply Chain Legislation for a duty of care.  That is, employers, logistics schedulers, the driver, the sender and receiver of the goods are included in that responsibility and it is an offence to request or impose any actions that may possibly cause a breach of law due to  fatigue management, speed or other offence.

To ensure you are not breaching legislation in requesting or arranging freight - follow the 3 steps:

  • Step 1:  Plan a suitable vehicle route - checking for rest areas
  • Step 2:  Plan and check that vehicle operating hours are within fatigue management regulations
  • Step 3:  Calculate the cost of the route

(Note: Refer to the Truck Operating Cost Calculator if you are unsure of costs for a more detailed estimate).

  • Be sure to allow for vehicle detours, delays, loading and unloading time.
  • If travel time is more than a single day, be sure to allow for overhead costs for the second day in your cost.
  • The chance of a return load due to location or load type, the return trip cost should be accommodated in the cost.
  • The trip is the vehicle's total daily distance - not just the trip for your specific load.
  • Do not forget to add the Fuel Levy Cost if applicable (this is not contingency).
